GALLOWGATE END
The Gallowgate End is the beating heart of St James’ Park, where the Toon Army is at its loudest. Packed with loyal supporters, it’s the place where chants thunder across the stadium and the famous black-and-white stripes feel most alive. This is where banners, tifos, and roaring songs showcase the unrelenting pride of Newcastle fans. To stand here is to be swept up in a wall of energy that drives the Magpies forward.
LEAZES END (SIR JOHN HALL STAND)
Opposite the Gallowgate, the Leazes End houses both home and away supporters, giving it a lively and sometimes tense atmosphere. The views here stretch wide across the pitch, offering a commanding perspective of the action. It’s also a favourite for those who love being part of the verbal sparring that adds edge to matchdays. The energy from this end balances the Gallowgate, ensuring noise reverberates across the entire ground.
MILBURN STAND
Named after Newcastle legend Jackie Milburn, this is the largest stand in the stadium, complete with premium hospitality suites and executive boxes. It’s a blend of tradition and modern comfort, offering a spectacular view of the pitch and the city skyline beyond. This is where corporate meets passion, as business guests join life-long supporters to cheer on the Magpies. From its highest seats, you can see across Newcastle—a view that makes it one of the most impressive stands in English football.
EAST STAND
Running along the touchline, the East Stand is steeped in history, with its smaller capacity lending an intimate feel. Fans here are close to the action, and its position opposite the Milburn Stand makes it a key part of the stadium’s balance and noise. It’s often home to families and those seeking a traditional matchday view without the hustle of the louder ends. Though modest compared to other stands, it embodies Newcastle’s heritage with understated pride.

Local Information & Tips
Parking Arrangements
St James’ Park sits in the heart of Newcastle, so on matchdays, traffic and parking can be challenging. While there is limited parking around the stadium itself, it tends to fill very quickly, especially for major fixtures. Fans are encouraged to use city-centre multi-storey car parks or park-and-ride services that connect smoothly with the Metro, which drops you within easy walking distance of the stadium. Planning ahead is crucial, as roads can get busy around the ground, but the benefit of Newcastle’s compact centre means that once you’ve parked, everything—including the pubs, shops, and the stadium—is only a short walk away.
Weather and Climate
Newcastle’s weather is famously unpredictable, though always bracing and full of character—much like its football. Winters are chilly, with average temperatures around 4–6°C, and often accompanied by brisk winds sweeping in from the North Sea. Summers are mild, averaging 16–19°C, though the city never quite escapes the chance of rain at any time of year. Packing a warm layer and a waterproof is a wise choice, whether you’re heading to the match or strolling along the Tyne.
Four Things to Do Beyond Football
QUAYSIDE
The Newcastle Quayside is a vibrant mix of old and new, with historic bridges standing alongside striking modern architecture like the Sage Gateshead and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. Stroll along the riverside, enjoy lively bars and restaurants, or simply take in the view of the famous Tyne Bridge lit up at night. It’s the perfect place to experience the city’s unique character and buzzing nightlife.
THE CASTLE KEEP
The city takes its name from this medieval fortress, and exploring its towers and ancient stone walls offers a fascinating glimpse into Newcastle’s past. Climb to the top for panoramic views over the city and river, and discover exhibits inside that reveal stories of knights, battles, and centuries-old life. It’s a piece of living history right in the city centre.
GRAINGER TOWN
A beautiful area of elegant Georgian architecture, Grainger Town is home to Grey Street, often voted one of the most stunning streets in the UK. Here you’ll find boutique shops, cafés, theatres, and galleries all nestled within striking buildings. It’s a wonderful place to wander, combining history with modern city life.
TYNEMOUTH
Just a short Metro ride from the city, Tynemouth is a seaside gem with sandy beaches, historic priory ruins, and bustling weekend markets. Visitors can enjoy fish and chips by the sea, try surfing on Longsands Beach, or explore the charming village atmosphere. It’s a refreshing escape from the city while still feeling very much part of Newcastle’s vibrant culture.

The Beating Heart of St James’ Park
In Newcastle, football isn’t just a pastime—it’s a way of life. St James’ Park towers proudly above the city, a cathedral of sport where thousands gather week in, week out, to see their beloved Magpies take to the pitch. Matchdays here are defined by passion, energy, and unshakable pride, with black-and-white shirts flowing through the streets and the Geordie accent ringing out in songs of loyalty. A home fixture at St James’ Park is more than a sporting event; it’s a cultural celebration that unites the city in joy, tension, and unrelenting devotion.
For visitors, attending a match here is to witness first-hand one of the most fervent fanbases in world football. The roar of the Gallowgate End, the camaraderie in pubs before kick-off, and the infectious atmosphere across the city make the experience unforgettable. Newcastle’s footballing tradition is steeped in resilience and character, mirroring the city itself—a place built on grit, warmth, and the unbreakable spirit of its people.
